Distribution Amplifiers Sometimes referred to as a "DA" or "splitter", a distribution amplifier is a device that distributes multiple outputs from a single source input. Distribution amplifiers provide some amplification to maintain the integrity of the original source signal but despite the implication, distribution amps do not typically amplify the signal beyond the original source signal (for that you need a Line Driver). Distribution Amplifiers come in different sizes which are commonly reflected as 1x2 (one input and 2 outputs) 1x4(one input and four outputs) and so on.

Buying Tip: Know which video signal type (VGA, DVI, HDMI etc) you want to split and whether you need audio is an important consideration to consider. Features and price points vary widely. Low end passive units contain no active electronics and simply route the signal without any enhancement. Professional and more robust units are typically active and will include different levels of signal enhancement including gain control, EQ adjustment, IR or RS-232 remote control but cost more. Video bandwidth and signal degradation over distance are two things to be aware of so check the specs. As always, choose the product best for your application.
