Video/Audio Switchers

A video and/or audio switcher is a device that allows the user to select between more than one source signal to one output. Switchers are used in commercial, residential and security applications to switch between video sources on the same or different displays such as monitors or televisions. Switchers come in different sizes which are commonly expressed as 2x1 (two inputs, one output), 4x1 (four inputs, one output) and so on. A Matrix switcher is similar except has multiple inputs and outputs such as 4x2 or 4x4 switchers.

Buying Tip: Know which video signal type (VGA, DVI, HDMI etc) you want to split and whether you need audio is an important consideration to consider. Quality, features and price points vary widely. Low end passive units contain no active electronics and simply switch the signal although you may get a “glitch” between sources. Professional or more robust units will use vertical interval or “seamless” switching which will provide smooth transitions from source to source but cost more. Additional features include programmable functions, IR remote, Ethernet and RS-232 control, EQ control and more. As always, choose the product best for your application.
