S-Video  Simplified
Originally introduced by JVC, the S-Video standard improved upon composite video by separating the luma or "Y" signal (black and white), chroma or "C" signal (color) for improved picture quality. Separating the signals improved resolution but S-Video can suffer image problems over distance due to the delay in the transfer of the Y/C signals.

S-Video typically uses a 4 pin mini-din connection, however a seven pin professional version was used on broadcast and pro-sumer video equipment in the past.

Common Applications
While newer digital formats such as HDMI and DVI are becoming more common, S-Video can still be found on professional and consumer electronics such as televisions, VCR's, DVD players, cable boxes, switchers and splitters. However it is nearing the end of it's life cycle.

How to choose the right S-video cable:
S-Video cables come in many quality grades. If only going short distances such as 10ft or below, a standard grade S-Video cable will suffice for general applications. However shielding percentage and type as well as overall cable construction can play a big part in picture quality-especially over long distances or in critical professional applications. As always, check the construction to be sure you are comparing apples to apples when shopping. One company's economy cable can be another's premium grade. Economy S-Video Cables

Economy S-Video cables are usually constructed of very small gauge wire, 30 or 32 gauge which can effect durability considerably for this cable in particular. Shielding percentage is usually relatively low (below 80%) or shielding is achieved using only less than desirable methods (no braided shielding in favor or foil or spiral). For short distance and non-volatile applications only.

Professional S-Video Cables

Pro S-Video cables are usually constructed of 26 or 28 gauge cable and should utilize multiple shielding methods including braided shielding with 90-95% coverage to ensure proper rejection of EMI and RF interference. S-Video connectors should be molded for added durability. Professional grade cables can sometimes be your best overall value.

Super Premium S-video Cables

Super-Premium S-Video cables are typically found in the retail stores and sold to consumers. While usually very well made with good shielding and materials, they also include "add-ons" such as 24k gold connectors, braided jackets, fancy connector molds and expensive blister packaging. These attributes bring no tangible benefit to the consumer while adding significantly to the construction cost of the cable and even more to the retail mark-up.
